Abstract:

Studies of electroweak gauge boson pairs at the LHC allow us to examine the gauge structure of the Standard Model and to test beyond leading order perturbative calculations. Inclusive production of gauge boson pairs is used to study triple gauge boson self-couplings and to search for new physics phenomena. Production of boson pairs via Vector Boson Scattering processes involves quartic gauge couplings and is sensitive to precise cancellations among various perturbative contributions, including those from the Higgs boson. This presentation will discuss most recent studies of electroweak boson pairs by the ATLAS collaboration, including observation of the electroweak production of same sign W boson pairs.

CV:

Rustem Ospanov obtained his PhD from University of Texas at Austin, where he studied neutrino oscillations with the MINOS experiment. He joined the ATLAS collaboration first as a postdoctoral researcher at University of Pennsylvania and later at University of Manchester. He is now a tenure-track associate reseaerch scientist at USTC. He worked on core trigger software and also contributed to the commissioning the ATLAS High Level Trigger system during initial LHC operations. His physics interests include searches for rare boson decays to di-muon pairs and measuring associated production of Higgs boson with a top quark pair. Most recently, he has worked on measuring performance of the ATLAS RPC detector and trigger and also has led the analysis team that has observed electroweak production of same sign W boson pairs.
